Quarterly Update from Chair Harris
March 31, 2026
As I step into my second year as Chair, I am reminded that the commitment remains the same, to advocate boldly for those who call the Near East Side home, place of work, place of worship, and more. That commitment has not wavered.
We began the year with a powerful retreat, bringing together commissioners, business leaders, neighbors, and city officials to imagine what our community can become, not just this year, but over the next five. A bold vision was cast, and in the months ahead, you will see greater visibility in our programming and deeper engagement with residents as we listen, connect, and serve with intention.
From a planning and zoning perspective, we reviewed four projects this quarter, all approved. Yet one stands as a generational milestone: the Poindexter Village Museum, set to break ground in May 2026. A space dedicated to preserving the history and contributions of Black people in Columbus dating back to the 1800s is more than development, it is legacy in motion. I am grateful for the leadership of Shelbi Toone, Ohio History Connection, and all who are bringing this vision to life. These are the kinds of projects that outlive our time in these roles, this is what it means to connect past, present, and future.
I also had the opportunity to sit down with Mayor Andrew Ginther to advocate for the Near East Side as the economic powerhouse it is. We discussed the importance of revisiting our area plan so that we shape development, not the other way around. I emphasized the need for a grocery store and more intentional, community-centered investment that sustains the livelihood of those who are already here.
Looking ahead to Quarter 2, be on the lookout, door to door, we’re coming. The commission has approved the distribution of thousands of door hangers to share upcoming events and opportunities to engage. If you want some on your street, reach out, we’ll make sure you’re included.
Let’s stay engaged. Let’s make a difference. And let’s continue to serve this community…together.
